Sterilization
- advocates the sterilization of companion animals as a necessary measure for population control.
- encourages animal shelters and rescue organizations to incorporate a spay/neuter program as part of the adoption procedure.
Puppymills
- strongly condemns “puppy mills” which mass produce puppies with no regard for the well-being of the mothers and their offspring.
- supports legislation to ban the operation of puppy mills.
- supports enforcement of standards and licensing for all breeders.
Pet Stores
- supports pet stores who partner with animal shelters and rescue organizations.
- advocates and supports regulations for humane standards in pet stores.
Feral Cats
- supports trap/sterilize/vaccinate/release program to help stabilize feral cat
populations and improve the overall health of feral colonies.
Chaining of Dogs
- advocates the banning of continuous chaining or tethering of dogs as the primary means of confinement.
- condemns the tying or hitching of dogs to a fixed object by choke chain or rope tied directly around the animal's neck.
- recommends that any companion animal which is kept outside for extended periods of time:
- be provided with suitable housing or shelter that provides protection from the elements and allows space for the animal to turn around freely and lie in a normal position;
- be provided with an enclosure that allows the animal to move around freely.
