Pet Care and Safety
How to stay Safe around dogs
If you meet a strange dog on the street:
- Never approach a strange dog. Stay as far away as you can - even if his tail is wagging, he may not be friendly.
- Don't run away - dogs love to chase!
- Never approach a dog in a car window or reach through a fence to pet a dog even if he does look friendly.
- Only enter a yard with a dog in it if the family is home and has given you permission.
- When meeting a dog, stand still and let the dog come to you, and smell you.
- Before petting a dog on a leash, always ask permission first.
- Never make sudden movements - approach slowly.
What if a dog approaches me?
- Remain calm - don't run or scream.
- Watch out for tell-tale signs: ears back, hair standing up on end, teeth showing, growling or barking.
- Hold your hands down by your sides and stand still like a tree.
- Don't look into the dog's eyes.
- Don't throw anything at the dog.
- If you are knocked over, roll into a ball to protect your face, neck and arms, with your face down and arms tucked in.
- Lie still and stay quiet.
